Heart Attack
Death of a portion of the heart muscle as a result of inadequate blood supply
Criteria for diagnosis based on:
- a clinical picture of myocardial infarction;
- new electro-cardiographic (ECG) changes consistent with a myocardial infarction; and
- elevation of cardiac enzymes
Stroke
Any cerebrovascular incident or accident producing neurological sequela which lasts more than twenty-four (24) hours.
Included are: infarction of brain tissue, haemorrhage and embolisation from an extracranial source.
Cancer
- A disease manifested by the presence of malignant tumours characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of malignant cells, and invasion of tissue.
- The term Cancer includes leukemia and Hodgkin’s disease.
- All skin cancers except malignant melanomas are excluded as well as premalignant tumours or polyps and carcinoma in situ.
Renal Failure
End stage renal disease which presents as chronic irreversible failure of both kidneys to function, as a result of which renal dialysis is instituted or renal transplantation is carried out. |
